Christ: The Head of the Church

Colossians 1:18–22

Every living body needs a head. The head directs the body, gives it identity, and sustains its life. Without a head, the body is lifeless. In the same way, the Church cannot exist or function without Christ. He is not only the foundation of the Church but also its Head.

Paul, writing to the Colossians, emphasizes that Christ must have the preeminence—that is, first place—in all things. Sadly, in many churches today, attention is often given to programs, personalities, or positions, while Christ Himself is given a secondary place. But the Word of God is clear: “And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence” (Colossians 1:18).

Christ Must Be First in the Church

Christ is eternal. He existed before all things and is the One through whom all things were created. His resurrection from the dead proves His divine power and authority over life and death. No pastor, bishop, or general overseer can take His place. Leaders in the church are servants under His authority, not replacements for His headship.

When Christ is not given first place in the life of a church, the church loses its spiritual direction. Every true church must therefore be centered on Christ—His Word, His Spirit, and His will.

Christ Has Made Peace Through the Cross

Through His sacrifice on the cross, Christ brought peace between God and man. His blood paid for our sins, purchased the church, and reconciled us to God. What we could never achieve by works or religion, Christ accomplished through His death.

This reconciliation is not limited to individuals alone; it has a universal scope, touching both heaven and earth. Because of this, Paul confidently declares that nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of Christ (Romans 8:38–39).

Christ Will Present the Church Perfect

The ultimate hope of believers is not only forgiveness today but also perfection in eternity. By His death, Christ transforms sinners into saints. Strangers are adopted into God’s family, enemies become friends, and the guilty are declared righteous.

On the final day, Christ Himself will present His church—washed, holy, and without blame—before the throne of God. What a glorious hope this gives to every believer!

Conclusion

Christ is the Head of the Church. He is the source of our life, our peace, and our eternal hope. If He is truly the Head, then He must have the first place in our personal lives, in our families, and in our churches.

Let us not merely confess that Jesus is Lord but live daily under His Lordship. A church or a Christian without Christ at the center is like a body without a head—lifeless and powerless. But when Christ is exalted as the Head, the church becomes alive, powerful, and victorious.

✝️ Christ is the Head—let us give Him the place He deserves.
